National population registration and social security number
As an immigrant you should contact the population register at the Swedish tax agency(Skatteverket) to get your name and adress registrered. When you do so you receive a social security number. This is needed in many contexts in Swedish society and the number is important to remember. If you move within Sweden, you should notify the population register. However, if you only plan to live in another town for six months or less, you do not need to report this.
The national population registration at Skatteverket is situated on Kungsgatan 27 in Linköping. You can also visit Skatteverket's website for further information. Information is available in several different languages.
Residence permits, visas and asylum
As an EU/EEA citizen you have the right of residence in Sweden and may study without a residence permit. The same applies to your family members with the exception of your parents. You and your family members are entitled to begin working immediately. If you would like to stay longer than three months, you have to register with the Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket).
If you come from a country outside the EU and you are planning to study for longer than three months, you require a residence permit.
If you want to work in Sweden and come from a country that is not a part of the EU, you must have a work permit. If you plan to work in Sweden for longer than three months you will also need a residence permit. For further information, visit Migrationsverket's website. Information is available in several different languages.
