Linköping municipality offers many opportunities to experience and participate in cultural activities. Theatre, concerts, art exhibitions and museums as well as courses in music, dance and art. In 2001 the municipality opened Kulturskolan which is not only a music school but also includes dance image/form for children aged from 6 years old to 22 years. There are many opportunities for those wishing to participate in cultural activities through an extensive array of associations.
“All children have the right to their own language, their own culture, their own religion and the right to participate in cultural and artistic life.” As stated in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Linköping municipality focused on this when it decided to open Kulturskolan and provide courses in dance, theatre and image/form. The school is decentralised and available to all those living in the municipality regardless of where the home is located. The music school has 3,000 students aged from 6 to 19 years and there are courses for almost all musical instructions. The students can choose song or to play in the orchestra in various ensembles. Music courses are available throughout the municipality with the central operations held in the concert hall. The music school has extensive concert operations. Kulturskolan also provides violin courses which follow the Suzuki method for children aged 3 to 5 years.
For children a little older and interested in music there are a number of localities including the music house Skylten which has 28 rehearsal premises, a concert hall as well as a café which has a large and a small stage. Also available is Elsas Hus, a cultural and media facility, which is available to young people aged from 15 years to 20. During the latter part of the summer the Nykvarnsfestival is arranged in Nykvarnsparken beside Stångån.
