For many years the business community in Linköping has been associated with various types of IT operations. There are many high technology companies and institutions in Linköping. The most important explanation for this is the favourable climate provided by the city for research and development as well as good educational courses.

Also located in the city is FOI, Swedish Defence Research Agency; VTI, Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute; SGI, Swedish Geotekniska Institute and SKL, Swedish National Laboratory of Forensic Science.
Linköping University with its Faculty of Health Sciences and the Institute of Technology form the most important regional foundation for cooperation between research and development and also contribute towards strengthening and rejuvenating the business community in Linköping.Naturally, the University is exceedingly important in providing a well-educated work force which can be recruited by existing companies as well as businesses considering locating to Linköping municipality.
