If you want to pay by card, pick up a package or if you need to prove your identity in another context, you need a valid ID. You can use your passport, driver's license or ID card. In some cases documents from abroad can be accepted, but not always.
ID cards and passports
If you are a Swedish citizen you can apply for passports and ID cards at the police passport office (Polisens passkontor). The office is situated on Brigadgatan 13.
Application is made to the police passport offices. ID card costs SEK 400 including photographs. Remember to take an approved ID with you when applying, such as
- Valid Swedish passport
- Valid national ID card
- Valid Swedish driving license
- Swedish SIS-marked ID card
- ID card issued by a government agency
All applicants for a passport will have to come personally to the passport office. The application document is made mechanically at the time of application. Passport Applications in Sweden cost SEK 400 including photographs. Remember to take an approved ID with you when applying. Approved identifications are:
- Valid Swedish passport
- Valid national ID card
- Valid Swedish driving license
- Swedish SIS-marked ID card
- ID card issued by a government agency

If you are not a Swedish citizen but a Swedish resident you can apply for an ID-card from the Swedish tax agency (Skatteverket).
To apply you must:
- Go to a Skatteverket office (situated on Kungsgatan 27 in Linköping).
- Have paid the application fee before you visit the office.
- Be able to prove your identity by an ID document or via an attester, i.e. provide evidence of who you are.
- Be registered as living in Sweden.
- Be at least 13 years of age.
- Have your parent/guardian´s approval if you are less than 18 years of age.
