The old town
In Gamla Linköping (Old Linkoping) one can experience what a small Swedish town was like during the second half of the 19th century. The houses, streets, signs, gardens etc tell the story of people´s everyday life and environment at that time.
This open-air museum comprises about ninety buildings, moved from other parts of Linköping, and consists of three parts: the town quarter, the Valla forest, and the countryside, represented by the Valla Leisure Park.
Museums and shops in the area
Baron von Lingen's house
An austere early 18th century facade contrasts with a light late 18th century interior. The home has been reconstructed according to an estate inventory from 1820.
Carin Nilson's house
Middle-class home from the 1910's. The ground floor flat was bought by Sigfrid and Hanna Nilson in 1913. Their two daughters kept the home intact after their parents' death in 1936, and one of them, the sculptress Carin Nilson, eventually bequeathed the home to Gamla Linköping in the 1960's.
Solliden
Working-class home from the 1920's. Just like Carin Nilson's house, this home was was given to Gamla Linköping after having been kept intact through the years. The house was owned by day labourer Albin Anderson and his family.
The school museum
Linköping's first elementary school for girls started in this house in 1848. Today, it contains three classrooms from the 1840's to the 1920's as well as the reconstructed home of a schoolmistress.
Other museums
In Gamla Linköping you also find a number of other museums, e.g. a ropeworks, bank, post and police offices, a fire station, printing museum and a sheet-metal workshop.
The old grocery shop
A grocery shop opened in this house in 1873. Today one can still experience the atmosphere of a shop from the turn of the century, and buy a traditional coneshaped paper bag full of sweets.
Shops and handicraft
The craftsmen in Gamla Linköping offer visitors many opportunities to buy Swedish handicraft and unique souvenirs. There are e.g. a pottery, a basket-maker, a lace-maker, a wood-carver, several textile shops and gift shops. At the chocolate shop one can watch the chocolate-maker work and, of course, buy Swedish chocolate.
Eating and drinking
"Wärdshuset" (the inn) in Gamla Linköping and "Mjellerumsgården" in Valla serves food for lunch all year round. "Dahlberg's Café" is also open all year and has an ice-cream parlour in one of the gardens of Gamla Linköping in summer. For further information, call 013-12 11 10.
Activities for children
In Gamla Linköping and Valla there is something for children of all ages! For example, there is the Fenomenmagasinet science centre and Valla Leisure park (see below). In summertime, the "puff-puff-train" goes regularly between Gamla Linköping and Valla, and in the Bryggaregården and Barnens Bod one can try all kinds of household work the traditional way, like washing, baking e t c, as well as try oldfashioned plays and toys.
Valla Leisure Park
Within about ten minutes walking distance from Gamla Linköping there is a large recreation area, where you can visit a railway museum, a carriage museum, a farming museum and other museums. There is also a large playground for children, a pony stable and pastures and cages with rabbits, sheep, birds and other animals. Information at 013-12 11 10.
